The Design Problem
With the history of having ambitious and diverse exhibition openings at the Honolulu Museum of Art, a proposal to include a Quentin Tarantino film festival seemed very possible. The project would span over a few days and would portray and dissect popular films by one of the most provocative directors in the industry.
With the focus in mind, the problem then consisted of designing the identity, print and digital collateral. This would include A Save-the-date, invitation, an RSVP, badges, and event booklet.
The Design Solution
The concept revolved around the director himself, and what how his work is read by the audience. Most of Tarantino's films appear to contain a straightforward plot usually pulling inspiration from classic western movies. However, beyond the "cheesy" punchlines, and predictable heroic moments, Tarantino embeds an incredible amount of multi-layered messages through the use of sound, music, setting, dialogue, color, art direction and time.
In order to convey his innovative thoughts, the design of each print collateral needed to resemble a seemingly simple purpose, but then, reveal underlying themes as they are read. Hence the name of the proposal, "Unloaded." The use of colors, and type were to be provocative while image, context and form provide the tone of voice.
